Bathroom design is all about personal preference. Whether you opt for a traditional bathroom design or you’re looking for something a little more modern - whatever your choice it must reflect your own style and be comfortable for you.
The basic layout of a typical British bathroom hasn’t really altered since the Edwardian times. However, certain design elements can drastically impact the functionality of a bathroom. What tends to set traditional bathrooms and modern bathrooms apart is the sink, bath and toilet.
Traditional bathrooms are timeless, elegant and luxurious. Featuring classic suites, from roll top baths to two bowl sinks - there are variety of conventional pieces that could completely transform your bathroom.
Modern styled bathrooms tend to be more popular as they are seen to be more of a fashion statement when it comes to interior design.
When it comes to bathroom design what works for one may not work for another, however if you struggling whether to decide between contemporary or traditional design take a look at the following comparison - it may inspire you and help you make your decision.
Sinks/BasinsSinks or basins are traditionally made from porcelain, however modern styled sinks are now made from composite resin, this helps create a wider variety of shapes for aesthetic purposes.
Conventional taps are made from bronze. zinc or brass and are chrome or gold plated - this of course makes them rather expensive. Modern style taps are made from a wider variety of materials - they are designed to be both functional and pleasing to the eye. Waterfall taps are designed with a controlled flow giving the illusion of a waterfall. Some modern taps are also fitted with LED lighting to show if the water flow is hot or cold.
Baths
Baths in traditional style bathrooms tend to be free standing - the taps and shower head are usually fixed to the centre of the bath and can’t be adjusted. Modern style baths tend to be fitted as part of a tub shower combo many are fitted this way to save space due to the fact many new houses have smaller bathrooms.
Showers are more of a modern feature to most bathrooms - there have been some designs that have been created to fit into more traditional style bathrooms however some of which are fitted with gold framed enclosures steering away from the chrome and silver look that tends to be associated with modern bathrooms.
Toilets
Traditional toilets are generally intricately designed, many of which with an arc deco style. Conventional style toilets can consume up to twelve litres of water in just one flush so they aren’t exactly great for the environment. Modern style toilets however have more efficient flushing systems and need less than half this amount.
Traditional toilets usually have a wooden seat, whereas more modern designs have plastic seats and some are also complete with automatic seat closing.
