The living room is the center to every families household and the way in which it is arranged can have a huge affect both practically and functionally.
The way you choose to position your furniture may not seem such a big deal but it can actually transform space.
Whether you're looking to make your living room more cozy or you’re bored and fancy a change, follow these tips for arranging a family living room and get the most out of the space you've got.
Find A Focal Point
Decide what the natural focal point of your room is, it could be your fireplace or you may have a large bay window. Whatever your focal point is, aim to direct you seating towards it - this way you have a feature to arrange your furniture around.
Your sofa will also play a large part in the positioning of the rest of your furniture. Perhaps you have a large and welcoming corner sofa or a couple of two seaters, try and aim to set these facing the focal point. In a family living room this will more than likely be the TV so be sure to position your sofa (sofas) so the TV is visible for everyone.
Be Symmetric
If your going to be traditional then you could opt for a symmetrical stance. If you have a couple of two seaters or a sofa and two chairs then place them face to face from one another with your focal point at one end.
This sort of positioning is great for game nights as your opposite one another. This sort of layout is great for conversation, particularly as the focal point is not in direct view for anyone so they’re are less likely to be distracted by the TV.
Keep Away From The Wall

Sectional sofas are great for families. If you've opted for a sectional (corner) sofa then don’t push it right into the wall - this can make the face feel claustrophobic.
Pulling the sofa away from the wall will let the light flow around it, for smaller living rooms you could use a side lamp to brighten the room up even more.
Be Practical
Practicality is vital for any family living room - you must consider the main functions for your room before you arrange your furniture. If you have small children then having a show home style living room simply won't work.
You must allow enough space between each piece of furniture - as much as you tell the kids not to run in the living room or jump on the sofa, lets face it they’re going to do it. Make sure your chosen layout has enough space for people to swish past and find their chosen seat. If you have guests over then they need a reachable drinking rest, ensure there is some form of table close to your seating area.
