How to Find a Locking Solution that Works for You

With all the modern home security options that is now available, it seem that a traditional lock and the accompanying key is just not enough anymore. But there are many solutions that are nothing more than bells and whistles, so you have to choose carefully. It is true that most hi-tech locks are made in a way that simplifies their use, but that isn’t a guarantee that they are safer, that is harder to breach. Burglars are following the trends, too. If a lock system seems complicated for a civilian, it needn’t be so for a computer geek burglar. Here are some rough directions and clarifications that may help you decide.

Deadbolt Locks

These locks operate by bolting the door into the door frame and the bolt must be operated manually by a key or a doorknob. Deadbolt locks have three components, an outside cylinder where the key is inserted, bolt and the thumb turn which allows controlling the bolt from the inside of the house. These locks must resist great impact forces during a forced entry so they are made of steel, bronze or brass.  Horizontal deadbolt is more vulnerable to prying because it interacts only with the door jamb. A vertical deadbolt, on the other hand, interlocks with an array of cast metal rings that are installed in the door frame.

Slip Bolt Locks

They are ideal for interior locks in the house like bathrooms or back-up solutions for external door locks. They are affordable when compared to all another systems, but also provide least security. Their operation is based on blocking the doorknob which disables the release of a spring-actuated latch that inserts into a door frame. Its vulnerability arises from the fact that a burglar may use other tool to release the pressure that keeps the spring in place and thus release the bolt. In addition, the doorknob and lock could together be displaced from the door with hammer or a forceful kick.

Commercial Locks

These can be found in every hardware store and come in a variety of types. You can consult a certified locksmith or a LEO if you have any qualms about what type of lock you need for a particular purpose. A pin-and-tumbler lock operates a series of spring-actuated pins that fit into small cylinders. The springs compress when the key is inserted the bottom and top pins will align clearing out what is called a shear line. Then the key can be turned. Tubular locks are best used for interior doors. The usually have a knob with a key on the outside and a turn button on the inside. Both types are vulnerable to breaching.

Electronic Locks

It’s important to mention here that these state-of-the-art security systems don’t guarantee the best possible protection. However safe and advanced you lock may be, most burglaries occur because of minute mistakes like forgetting to lock the door or leaving the window canted, claim highly-rated master locksmiths. No burglar ants to tamper with a complicated lock if they can find the easier way. Law enforcement officers often state that surveillance cameras are more efficient deterrent than any hi-tech lock system. Still, electronic locks are popular for a number of reasons.

Biometric Locks

This may be the right thing for you if you like technology and the ease of access it brings. With the price range of a couple of hundreds of dollars they are not cheap, but they add to the market value of the house in the future. There are several variants, the most prominent of which is the biometric lock. It has a fingerprint reading scanner and unlocks the door only if it recognizes the fingerprint pattern. They operate on an optical or thermal principle, memorizing the fingerprints of your family members, for example as authored users.

Proximity Locks

Proximity locks, on the other hand are similar to car door locks. Depending on the setting, you can adjust them to unlock automatically when you get close to the house carrying the key fob in your pocket or bag or you can give it a remote signal by pressing a key on the fob. Even better, if you are into smartphones and networks, you can install a lock that exchanges data with your smartphone via Bluetooth or 3G and allows you to keep a record of entries and leaves. You can even set it up to send automated text messages relaying the time when someone else unlocks the door.
