Which Kitchen Countertop Material is Right For You?

Choosing a countertop material is an important decision when remodeling or updating your kitchen. Each material creates a completely different kitchen experience. With such a wide variety of materials, styles, and colors, it can be overwhelming for some to choose one. Think about how you’ll use your kitchen countertops, your budget, and what style of kitchen you want.

Stainless Steel
If you’re looking for a modern, edgy look, consider stainless steel. It is one of the most sanitary and easy to clean countertop materials, but it can be expensive. Some people consider it to be too cold or surgical, but when done correctly, stainless steel can give your kitchen a distinguished, sleek look.

Laminate
Laminate countertops are great for homeowners with a limited budget and for families with small children as they’re easy to clean and maintain. Laminate countertops are available in many different colors and patterns, even mimicking natural stone and wood. One of the downsides of laminate countertops is they can be easily scratched. Always be sure to use a cutting board if you choose to go with laminate.

Quartz
Quartz countertops are engineered to look like natural stone. They’re extremely durable and available in a wider range of colors than real granite or stone. Quartz countertops are easy to maintain and add an elegant look to any kitchen. However, quartz countertops are one of the more expensive countertops, with some styles even more expensive than granite.

Granite
Granite is one of the most elegant and classic countertop materials. While it can be expensive, granite is strong and durable. While you probably won’t scratch your granite if you use it as a cutting board, you’ll most likely dull your knife blade because of how hard granite is. Granite countertops need to be sealed properly to keep out water and bacteria.

Reclaimed Wood
Reclaimed wood is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a green, eco-friendly countertop material. It is strong, durable, and naturally beautiful. Like granite, reclaimed wood needs to be properly sealed to decrease the risk of water damage or build-up of bacteria. While it is available in many different colors and styles, reclaimed wood can be expensive.

Recycled Glass
Another green material, recycled glass gives your kitchen a truly unique look. No two pieces of recycled glass countertops are alike, so you’ll be sure to have a one-of-a-kind kitchen, even if it is a little pricey. It is strong and durable and does not crack easily. It may be difficult to find cabinets that complement your recycled glass countertop, but once you do, you’ll love how different your kitchen looks.

Concrete
Concrete is by far the easiest countertop material to customize and personalize. It is extremely strong and durable and suitable for both indoor and outdoor kitchens. Concrete can be molded into any shape or form and comes with many different color and edge options. Objects like shells or glass can be embedded in the concrete to make a completely unique look. Prices can vary widely, though it is generally on the pricey side.
