De-Cluttering the Attic and Making Use of the Freed Space

The attic is an easy space to clutter up. That is the go to storage, the place where you create piles of junk that you may or may not ever see again. After a while it is quite possible that you do not even know what you have stored in the attic. After all, whatever you place there is basically just a spot to put aside things that get into your way in all other rooms. But then, does this not mean that now all those things are in your way in the attic? Is there really nothing you can do with it other than throw away old things you are not sure how sentimental you feel about?

Of course there is. Let us start through the process of de-cluttering the old room and then see what else you could do with it.

Going through all the things in the attic should be a priority. Unless you suddenly feel the urge to throw away everything inside, you cannot just dump everything out. Go through every item one by one and decide whether it could be of some use to you. All the things that you are sure that you will never need should simply go  to a separate pile. This pile you can donate, throw away, or why not even earn some money out of it by making a garage sale. Every item, as long as it is intact, can be profitable. Make a separate pile for all the things you are not willing to throw away. Now, you can think about moving that pile to your garage, or to the cellar, if you have one. Having a spare room in the house is always a plus, but you can hardly make any use of it if it is full of junk.

When you have cleared everything up, you should do some professional domestic cleaning. You have no idea how much dust and bacteria the items stored there could have accumulated, so better take no chances and clean up the place. Skip the duster, go immediately for a vacuum cleaner, and then apply a mop with a strong disinfecting cleaning product. It would be better if the cleaner is eco-friendly as you will not fill the small room with chemicals you will have to breathe. Once done, ventilate as much as you can. Open up the roof window if possible and let all the toxins from the cleaner to dissipate. Rinse and mop up again so that you do not leave a dank floor – that is how mould is created. Speaking of mould, look everywhere for accumulations of mould and clean it before it becomes a problem to the house itself.

Now that you have a clean attic, what to do with it? Well, the options are only as limited as your imagination. Depending on the size of the attic, you can use it for everything from a storage for documents to an extra bedroom. The latter is an excellent idea if you want to add an extra guestroomto house more visitors on holidays. Get a new bed, or an old one currently used to store laundry, pull it up and decorate. If you want to breathe in some new life into the room before that, repaint it, and why not even add some wallpaper. Attic rooms can be quite cozy when treated the right way.

You can instead make a study. Make your very own palace of solitude on the top of the house where you can peacefully work, away from all the disruptions from everyday life in the house, away from the noise and rattle. Or why not be eccentric and place an entertainment centre, a room just for games, and a place where you can store board games if you are the tabletop player type. Or why not even a kitchen! Think about it, it will take some work, but once done, you can have a peaceful place to cook your meals without anybody bothering you. And kitchen cleaning will be an easy task what with the smaller space to go through.

The possibilities are plenty, all you need to do is roll up the sleeves, clear up the attic, do some proper cleaning, and then use your imagination to construct a room you have always wanted to have.
