Creating a natural space for your home

Western lives are becoming increasingly more busy and stressful so it is no surprise homeowners are turning to more relaxing, earthy interiors. Earth colours manage to be both neutral and impressive at the same time thanks to the complex and rich tones, and because so many colours occur in nature they can be contrasted with an array of colours, patterns and tones.

Bring in colour
When choosing earth colours, the instinct can be to stick with browns and greens throughout the interior. While these colours do work beautifully together, brightly coloured accents are a great way of adding a new dimension to your space. Nature has an array of inspiration to choose from, from jewel coloured petals to fiery sunsets.

Use various shades to build depth
One of the most beautiful things about nature is the range of shades and tones out there. Even in a seemingly brown and grey forest, there are thousands of shades which contrast and complement each other to create a rich, satisfying picture. Once you have chosen the main colour for a room, layer various shades together to create an interesting combination.

Opt for wooden furniture
Incorporating wood can really emphasise the natural look and literally bring nature into your home. Opt for wooden furniture which have been stained to enhance their natural beauty, such as these walnut doors from Emerald Doors, rather than painted furniture. Use a combination of large pieces, such as a coffee table, with smaller decorative pieces for a greater effect.

Mix multiple textures
The great outdoors has every texture imaginable; from silky soft flowers to gnarled tree trunks and thick, plush grass. Use a range of textures and fabrics to replicate nature; leather sofas can be paired with fur cushions, rough wood with soft tablecloths and smooth glass with steel décor for a contrasting feel.

Decorate with plants

Plants and flowers make a great addition to any earth themed room. Bright potted flowers can add colour to your home if you prefer to opt for neutral colours, whereas potted trees bring in a majestic feel from the outdoors. If you prefer not to have real plants, wall art and decorative accessories are a good hypoallergenic option.
