How to make your bathroom healthy and green

Many people think that the bathroom is the least important room in their home. On the other hand, go back and remember a particularly busy morning when the entire family is gunning for the same bathroom –not that unimportant then, right? In short, your bathroom may not be the place that will wow the visitors to your home, but it needs to done right and above everything else, it should be healthy and green.

1. Get rid of the mold
The number 1 enemy of your health in the bathroom is the mold. Mold is actually a living, breathing organism, or more precisely a colony of organisms that can lead to a number of health issues, such as allergies, asthma attacks as well as some more serious respiratory infections. The good thing is that it is relatively easy to prevent mold and to get rid of it. All you need to do is remove the heat and the humidity from the bathroom.

The best way to accomplish this is to have a window in your bathroom that you will open for ventilation. In addition to helping you get rid of the mold, it will also bring light into your kitchen. If you do not have the option of putting in a window, you should at least consider a fan or hooking your bathroom on the house/apartment ventilation. Opening the bathroom door after use is also a way to reduce the humidity and the heat.

2. Isolate the toilet
It may seem a bit disgusting, but a toilet is a toilet and it is ripe with all kinds of nasty things, even if you do everything to keep it clean. For example, mere urination (by a man) will result in spraying (yes, it sounds disgusting) that can get places where you do not want it to get. This is why the best thing to do is to have the toilet somewhat isolated from the rest of the bathroom. We are not saying that you should build a wall around it, but you should move it away from other features in the bathroom.

3. Stop wasting
You would not believe the energy and especially the water that are wasted in the bathroom. For instance, try and think about whether you leave the faucet on when you brush your teeth. If you do, you are already wasting so much water. Things get even more wasteful when you factor in long, unnecessarily long showers and especially when you factor in leaking toilets and showers.

There are a number of things that you can do to stop wasting water in your bathroom – for one, repair broken showers and leaking toilets; also try and install a system where your toilet will use the water already used in shower or sink (grey water). Most importantly, try and change your habits by taking quicker showers, turning off the water when you are not using it and so on.

4. Mind your step
It is said that the bathroom is one of the most dangerous rooms in a home for a reason. The number one reason why this is the case is that bathrooms have very slippery surfaces that are often made even more slippery with water and condensation. This goes more in the “safe” than “healthy” category, but we feel that we should warn you about the dangers of slipping in the bathroom. The ways to avoid this is to have rugs and non-slip surfaces installed in the most dangerous areas.
