Lines naturally form in many of the items and patterns we place around the home. These lines can affect the mood and feel of a room. For example, vertical lines often suggest a sense of dominance whereas horizontal lines are more associated with a calm environment. A good overall balance of vertical, horizontal and curved lines can create the perfect atmosphere for your room. Interior product designer Sarah Parris and interior designer Rhiannon Gillis have helped to come up with some tips.

Patterns
When speaking to Sarah Parris she reminded us not to be bogged down with preconceptions about pattern. We often think of straight lines in formal situations such as a pin-striped suit, whereas a floral patterned dress would be seen as more casual. These basic ideas are often found in architecture and interiors. Sarah shows us how adding colour can change the mood of a room. Take this New York modern apartment, by simply adding colour the straight lines are less harsh and give a sense of fun.

Sarah added that small scaled patterns can make a room appeal smaller than it is. To overcome this, mixing small patterns with larger scaled patterns it can open up the room.
Placement
Rhiannon Gillis offered her advice on creating illusions by carefully composing the items you have around the home. Here are here top tips:
· To make a room appear taller than it is, paint the celling a lighter colour or use short items of furniture. Another way to achieve this is to use tall linier over-sized mirrors –these draw your attention up. Large vertical mirrors are a great way to do this.
· If you’d like to make a room feel more open, horizontal lines are a great way to do this. Adding wall shelves can help to achieve this, placing items of similar sizes can bring an additional sense of balance to the room.
· When trying to make a space seem dramatically larger than it is, longer shaped piece of furniture can be used to achieve this. For example long sofas placed horizontally in a room can balance out a long coffee table and rug – giving the room a sense of space and openness.
