5 Tips To Spruce Up Your Kitchen Countertops

The kitchen is where the magic happens – where you feel like the ruler of your own little kingdom. But, like any ruler, sometimes you get bored with what you see, especially when you see it every day. For others, it’s like a passing whim. After some years, you’ve forgotten why you ever choose lime or “old England” as your kitchen theme.
Maybe it’s time to redesign and redecorate your little isle. And, what better way to improve your kitchen’s look than to redesign your countertops.
Here are five great and easy tips to get you started on your project:

#1 Figure out your counter’s purpose

Countertops play a huge part in the design of the kitchen. Aside from the expensive silverware and the top-of-the-line equipment you have, these are the ones that catch the attention of most people. They also serve different purposes, depending on their size.
Wider countertops suggest a lot of cooking and baking going on. Slimmer tops, on the other hand, are for those who are on the go, or just love to save up a little more space in the kitchen. Whatever purpose your countertops serve you, you better figure it out before the redesigning takes place. Picture it in your head, and think about the purpose. Do you need more space?  Do you want more equipment? What kind of look or impression do you want your kitchen to give off? Plan it out, then proceed to the design.

#2 Consider your material

Now that you’ve established what your countertop is for, it’s time to pick out materials. Having a theme for your kitchen is the best way to figure out what kind of materials to look. If you want a classic, elegant feel to your kitchen, pick some nice dark wood material or glass.
If you want your kitchen to have a strong, modern look, opt for stainless steel. If you’re more on the adventurous side, why not try and get some recycled materials? Everything is all up to you. Get crazy! A word of caution, though.
Consider also the purpose of your countertop in picking the right materials. You don’t want to mess up your pretty counter if you’ll be doing some heavy duty cooking. Make sure to not just consider style, but also durability.

#3 Don’t be afraid! They’re durable!

And speaking of durability, a lot of people sacrifice style for durability. They’re always afraid to pick out that new countertop becausethinks it won’t last! In theory, all countertop materials are reliable. People won’t be using them as countertops if they weren’t, right?
If you really want to go with something that could stand the test of time, heat and constant barrage, go for some heavy duty materials like marble or even Corian. If you’re an earthy person, go with wood! Let go of your fears, make your dreams come true and choose that countertop that you’ve always dreamed of having.

#4 You don’t have to stick to one.

In the kitchen, that is. If you’re the type that easily gets bored, get rid of that habit and spruce up your kitchen by choosing different materials be it a granitecountertops or quartz. No one ever said you needed only a single material for ALL your countertops, right?
Mix and match, depending on the style that you want, the purpose of each counter, or both. You can use marble for those counters that are prone to spills, then use wood for the rest to have a great contrast. Don’t be afraid to choose the materials like you choose your outfits, like matching a plain top with printed pants. Your kitchen could use that plain and print mixture as well.

#5 Top up using stylish edges and color splashes

Be creative with countertop edges. You can use a built-up edge on your counters to give it more or a personality and spunk. Go either with round or even curved up edges that give off sophistication and sass.
As for color, you can use color either to point people’s eyes in a specific direction, or to make your kitchen look wider than it really is. Always choose soft and light shades in your kitchen to give it that expanded illusion. Contrast colors to give it a little spice.
Your kitchen deserve the best of it all - design wise and quality wise!  Experiment, combine colors and style, make mistakes fast and get right back on the horse! Kitchen design is fun that way, isn't it?
