How to Deal with Stains on the Carpet

You know that the carpet in your home requires constant care and maintenance in order to stay in shape. A carpet can last you a good number of years, if you can provide adequate care. Truth be told, carpets that are exposed to a great deal of dust and spoils from human traffic will be in bad shape within years. This is why proper carpet cleaning is required.

Regular vacuuming is not always enough. You will have to consider thorough carpet cleaning every few months to assure your carpet is in perfect condition. The real danger comes in the form of stains and spills that may occur incidentally, however. Not only can they ruin the fibers, but spoil the coloring of your carpet and overall cause you a great deal of trouble. The solution is to learn how to tackle with this problem in time, without delay and with expertise.

Before you read about the most common carpet stains and ways to remove them, you should know that the technique that works best is to blot the stain. Rubbing it will only make matters worse. That said, read on about how to clean specific types of stains:

-          Oil and grease - if you are a cooking enthusiast, chances are it is going to happen sooner or later. If you spill oil or grease on your carpet, do not panic. Simply take out some dishwashing detergent and blot the stain with a cloth. It works on dishes and it will work on carpet stains too.

-          Wine - if you spill red wine on your carpet, you should act as quickly as possible. Dilute the stain with some white wine, and blot the excess liquid from the fibers. If you pour generous amount of salt, this will help with absorbing the liquid and make further carpet cleaning easier. You can pick among club soda, carpet shampoo and water plus vinegar mix when it comes to treating the stain further.

-          Coffee and tea - coffee and tea spills can leave dark stains on your carpet, if treated inappropriately. Blot the liquid with a dry towel first, to absorb the drink from the fibers. Water and vinegar works well for further treatment, or you can always go with a specialised carpet cleaner to ensure no trace of the stain remains.

-          Ink - if ink incidentally gets squirted on the carpet, or when children take drawing outside their coloring books, you will want to see it immediately removed. Otherwise you risk the ink setting on the carpet. To deal with this blot the stain with isopropyl alcohol and soak the spot for 10 minutes in the solution. Remove with a vacuum cleaner and repeat this procedure several times till the stain is completely gone.

-          Pet accident stain - even well trained pets sometimes get too excited and leave a mess on your carpet. Here’s how you deal with the situation: remove excess debris with a scraper and blot any liquid. If the stain is dry moisten it and use a carpet cleaning solution. For the smell you can use baking soda and vinegar to neutralise unpleasant odors.

This covers a number of the most common stains on the carpet. Now that you know how to handle them, you should not panic if an accident occurs.
