High Ceiling Paint Tips

Dust first. High ceilings collect dust and other debris very easily, so it’s important to clean the area prior to painting. Use a telescoping duster from any home improvement retailer to swipe away dust that has collected on the surface of your ceiling. Pay close attention to the corners!
Set up home-made scaffolding. Using two ladders space them apart and rest a flat, sturdy piece of wood board between them. This will act as a shelf while you work where you can place paint buckets, extra brushes, towels, and any other supplies you might need. Be sure that the board is level to prevent things from falling off of it.

Consider safety. No matter what type of home improvement project you’re taking on, it is always important to consider your safety while you are working. Take precaution when working on hard to reach places by setting your ladder on a rubber mat, as opposed to laying it on a drop cloth where it can easily slip. When utilizing scaffolding, work with an assistant who can help with passing painting supplies and stabilizing the ladder if necessary.

Use the right tools. As with any paint project, it’s important to gather the necessary tools before you start the job. When it comes to painting high ceilings, your biggest challenge is going to be dealing with height. Using a measuring tape, find out the height of your ceiling to determine the length of the ladder you’ll need. Don’t forget that you’ll need to cut in those hard-to-reach corners with a paint brush, so make sure the ladder allows you to get close enough to the ceiling. You will also want to find an extension pole that you can attach a paint roller to. Note that the pole shouldn’t be so long that you can’t handle it while balancing on a ladder.

Cut-in and paint. Start by taking a paintbrush and apply a three inch wide strip around the entire perimeter directly where the wall meets the ceiling. Next, apply the paint in small areas at a time, usually patches of about three or four square feet. To fill in the rest of the ceiling, use a zig-zag pattern with your roller. Typically, creating M’s or W’s and then filling in the spaces provides optimal coverage.
